I realize I have not written a lot about what actually goes on during Camp itself as I tend to focus more on my travels, however, I had a hilarious situation happen yesterday and I felt obligated to share it with whomever might be reading this. So, with that, my story is as follows:
Between the hours of noon and two, the CDC is scheduled to have naptime. This means that for those two hours while the kids are sleeping, us teachers get to have time to relax, read, or work on things regarding the classroom itself. My classroom, Toddler C, is situated to where there is the main gate, which leads to the front door, and an additional gate that connects my classroom with Preschool E. My lead teacher, Aisha, was sitting on one half of the class, where I took up the other to make sure we had a visual of all the kids in the room. Leaning against the gate that connects to Preschool E, I started reading my book, when suddenly, out of my peripherals, I saw three little fingers pushing a fake cockroach under the crack of the gate. I thought about just leaving it on the floor next to me, but I thought it would be WAY more funny if I pushed the cockroach back to whomever was on the other side. Pushing it back and thirty seconds later, the cockroach and the three little fingers were back, although they had moved up about a foot from the original sighting. I pushed it back, moving it to a different part of the gate. This pushing of the cockroach back and forth lasted a good five or six turns, each time having the cockroach arrive in a different part of the crack under the gate then before. Waiting for the cockroach to return back to my side, all of the sudden I see something fly over the top of my head, and realize that my unknown friend had thrown it over the gate itself. About ten seconds after the cockroach was thrown, I hear the teacher from Preschool E tell the boy to lay back down and close his eyes. It was then that my mystery friend was revealed, and I could not help to laugh at the whole thing.
I never did end up telling the teacher it was partially my fault that he was off his naptime mat, but it is moments like this that make me love the work I am doing, and is a constant reminder into why I’m here.
